Reminders:

• PE is every Tuesday. Please remember to keep bookbags home. We no longer need PE kits in school. Please only bring in your pumps, this will be kept in school.
•  Homework will be given on Thursday and completed online . Children have been given their login details which have been glued into their reading records. Please can homework be handed in by Tuesday. 
• Children must read every night at home. Please can you sign their reading record once read.  

We have had an amazing start to the new year and are excited to have everyone back ready to learn!! We have missed everyone over the time off school. Please have a look at the subject pages to see the amazing activites children have been doing.  We hope you find this useful and enjoy discussing this with the children.

* Black shorts( girls are allowed to wear black leggings).

* Plain red T-shirt/ Red T-shirt with the school logo

* Plain black joggers are allowed when P.E. takes place outside. (With no logos etc)

Flashlight Friday!

This term we are also trying Flashlight Friday! At the end of every Friday the children choose a book from the reading area or from home. We sit on the carpet around the imaginary fire on the interactive board and read for 10 minutes. The Hummingbirds have really enjoyed this experience so far and have found it to be very theraputic. Try this at home too!

The Hummingbirds are looking very relaxed!

Year 2

Spring 2

English

This half term we have been reading ‘Mudpuddle Farm’ by Michael Morpurgo . We look at the language used in the stories and what we knew about the characters to create our own drama, hot seat, write wanted posters and stories. We used our Talk 4 Writing to retell the story and create a story map.

Maths

We have found out how to work out problems involving division by sharing and grouping including those with remainders.

Theme - The Farm Shop (science)

This half term our main focus has been plants. We started by thinking about what we would like to know. We wondered if all seeds were the same and what they looked like inside. We made grassheads and watched them grow and then gave them some really great haircuts! We investigated which part of the seed grows first, what keeps plants healthy and the effects of temperature on plants.

PE

Our focus this half term is games. We have practised the skills of attacking and defending using these to play small team games.

Spring 1

English

Our topic this half term has been Non- Chronological Reports. We have linked this to our theme topic Explorers. We used our knowlegde and research skills to write a report about Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus for the library service.

Maths

This half term we have been practising our addition and subtraction skills. We have been doing this using tens and ones in a pictorial way.

We then moved onto exchanging.  We have solved lots of one step and two step problems using these operations.

Theme- Explorers (History and Geography)

Our theme topic has been Explorers. We used books, the internet and film clips to find out all about Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus.

These are some of the things we have found out…..

1. Christopher Columbus was born in Italy.
2. He set sail looking for a route west to India.
3. Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon.
4. The moon is lifeless

Ask your child to share with you one of their ‘Did you know facts’.

PSHE

Our learning this half term has been all about rules and responsibilities. We have revisited our class rules and discussed how we can work together as a team.

We have been asking the three Reedley Questions..

1. Is it safe?
2. Is it kind?
3. Is it my best?

Autumn 2

English

Traditional tales

In English this half term we have been learning about traditional tales with a twist. The story we focused on was Little Red Riding Hood. We retold the story using ‘talk4write’ and then used this to create a role on the wall for each character.

Maths                                                                  

In Maths we have been learning how to find fractions of shapes and numbers.  We have also explored the operation Multiplication, using what we had learnt to answer questions.

Theme- focus Science

Our topic this half term has been ‘Fighting Fit’. We have investigated how medicines should be used and looked after. We also found out what all living things have in common.

STEM

This term we have designed and made our shoe box vehicles for the S.T.E. M project.

STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering and Maths; we have used skills for all of these areas when building our vehicles.

The car that travelled the furthest down the ramp then gets entered into a competition in the New Year with other local schools.  The winner from our class was Is-haq Shabir.

Weaving

We have taken part in a whole school weaving project this term. This was very exciting and the children had lots of fun learning the weaving techniques.

We started off with a visit from James Ballough who is part of the Lancashire Outreach Programm. He focused on introducing the children to the Lancashire Loom. We made a human loom and the children each re-enacted a part of the loom.

We then made a prototype for our weaving project using paper plates and a variety of materials. We loved them so much we chose to use them for our calendars.

Our final piece was a piece to enhance Reception’s outdoor area. We weaved a variety of materials into a large hula hoop and Mrs King was super impressed with our finished weaving.

Autumn 1

English

Stories with familiar settings

We have been reading the story 'The Pirates Next Door' by Jonny Duddle. We acted out the story, wrote messages to Jim Lad and also wrote a story all about Jim Lad and Matilda's adventures.

Mathematics

Place Value

We have been representing numbers in different ways including partitioning, drawing tens and ones and writing the number in words. It was fun working as a team, to find different ways of making a number.

Geography

We have found out about the physical and human features in the local area. First we looked around the school grounds and then we went for a walk on the roads nearby to see what we could see. We saw lots of different types of houses as well as Pendle Hill in the distance. Next we drew our own maps to show the features around our school.

History

We have been finding out how games have changed over the years by asking our parents which games they played when they were young. We talked about different games that can be played in the playground and found that many of them have been played in the past.

PHSE

We identified lots of different feelings. We talked about how to recognise how other people are feeling by looking at the expressions on their faces.
