Autumn 1

The place where I live (focus- Geography and History)

Geography

We are going to find out about the physical and human features in the local area.

For the knowledge organiser for this topic please see the file attached at the bottom of this page.

Here are some pictures of things we found on our walk around our local area.

History

This week we have been thinking about how our local area has changed. We looked at some maps from 1940s and 1960 and found that our school was built in place of a farm. Lots of the houses we live in had not been built and there were lots of farmers’ fields instead!

We thought of questions we would like to ask Mrs Walton about how the school had changed.

When was the school built?

How many classes did it have at first?

Who was the first head teacher?

We found out that the school was built in 1972 and took two years to build opening in 1974. It opened with only 7 classes. The first head teacher was called Mr Robinson and since then there have been three more heads.

Autumn 2

Fighting Fit (Focus -Science)

Our topic this half term has been ‘Fighting Fit’. First we learnt about how to create a healthy balanced meal for Little Red Riding Hood to take to Grandma. We made sure we only put a small treat in the basket! Next we investigated how medicines should be used and looked after. We also found out what all living things have in common.

In this topic we have found the answers to the following questions:

How do humans stay healthy?

What are the effects of medicines on humans?

How do I know when something is alive?

How do people change as they get older?

DT- STEM

We were set a challenge to design a sleigh for Father Christmas that used wheels incase there was no snow and had a way of holding the sack of toys in place.

We started by researching lots of vehicles and thinking about what our sleigh would need. We designed our sleigh thinking about the placement and style of the wheels and how to hold the sack of toys safely in place.

We used a hacksaw to cut the dowel and then attached the wheels. Then we built the sleigh using an old cereal box. We used wool and elastic bands to help keep the sack of toys safe. Finally we raced the sleighs.

Art- Printing

We used string, card and straws to make a printing relief. Carefully we painted over the top and then used it to make four identical prints changing the colour each time to represent the four seasons. We used the prints to make our calendars.

Spring 2

Explorers (Focus- History)

We have been finding out about Neil Armstrong. We read books, looked on the internet and watched film clips.

We learnt he was the first person to walk on the moon.

We sequenced the events of the first moon landing.

Summer 1

The Wind in the Willows (Focus- Science)

This half term we have been finding out all about different habitats. We researched why camels live in the desert and which habitat snails prefer.

We watched the snails every day for a week and recorded which habitat they were in. We found out that the snails did not like sand.

Summer 2

Buckets and Spades (Focus -Science)

Materials

We planned an investigation to see whitch material would be the best to fix a hole in my bucket. To make it fair we used the same sized bucket (plastic cup), the same sized hole and put the hole in the same place. We added the same amout of water to each and watched to see what would happen.
