English

Autumn 1

Narrative

Our English focus this term is a narrative and non-fiction based around the story The way home for wolf, by Rachel Bright. We will be researching animals that we will write a non- fiction page for and then incoroprate them into our own stories.

This week we have been using Talk 4 Write to learn and retell the story through actions. Here is our story map that we have used to help us recall the story and actions.

We used the story as a stimulus to write information texts about animals. After we had taken notes from a range of clips and texts we sorted our facts under headings. We used this plan to write our own non-chronological report.

Riddles

This week we are looking at riddles. We identified the features of riddles and then used pictures of objects to make up our own.

Autumn 2

Traditional Stories With A Twist

We have been reading versions of the story Little Red Riding Hood. We acted out parts of the story and used the drama technique 'freeze framing' to think about the characters thoughts, feelings and actions at different points in the story.

Drama with Burnley Youth Theatre

We enjoyed a visit from BYT where we took part in some drama activites linked to the story Little Red Riding Hood.

Instructions

We made cards for our families and then wrote instructions. We remembered to write a you will need list and use imperative verbs. We used a colour wash using water colours and the art technique of tearing to make the card.

Poetry

We studied the poem

T'Was The Night Before Christmas By Clement Clarke Moore

We did lots of learning about the vocabulary and learnt some of the poem using Talk 4 Write. You can listen to our poem on Twitter.

Spring 2

Non- Chronological Reports

This half term we have written a book all about Neil Armstrong. We did lots of research first by reading books, looking on the internet and watching film clips.

Summer 1

Animal Stories

The Wind in the Willows By Kenneth Grahame

This half term we enjoyed the book 'The Wind in the Willows'. We found lots of new words to use in our writing and enjoyed hearing about the adventures of Ratty, Mole and Toad.

We have been enjoying lots of poems written about the sea and beach. We investigated the different words used and how they made us feel.
