Reading

K.L. Explore new vocabulary.

KL: Identify features of texts.

To begin today's learning, I would like you to have a go at this activity here. It is an interactive game where you need to sort out the features of a biography and things that don't belong in a biography. (If you get it wrong, please try again).

Then I would like you to complete this word exploration grid. These three words will appear in our Guided Reading text tomorrow so the more you learn now, the more knowledgeable you will be in our reading tasks tomorrow. You might need to use Word Hippo to help you out.

This should take you about 1/2 hour.

Remember to spend 20 minutes reading for pleasure to work towards your reading award.

English

Grammar

K.L. Identify formal and informal vocabulary.

Today I would like you to download this sheet here

On this sheet there is a letter of complaint to a restaurant. I would like you to choose which phrases to keep to make it formal on the left hand side and which phrases to keep on the right hand side to make it informal.

Whilst you are making your choices, please think about which one you think it would be most appropriate to send as a letter of complaint and why.

Writing

K.L: Analysing creating persuasion

In Act 4 Scene 1, Juliet visits Friar Lawrence and she is desperate for some help so that she can be with Romeo.

Friar Lawrence comes up with a genius plan: Juliet should drink a potion which will make her seem dead then she can run away with Romeo.

Activity 1: Spend 5 minutes writing down things that you might expect Friar Lawrence to say to persuade (convince) Juliet that this is a good idea.

Activity 2: Watch a few videos of 'The Shouty Man' from Horrible Histories. Here are a few of my favourites:

Shouty Man - Incan Hole

Shouty Man - Greek Messenger

or here is a compilation of all the Shouty Man videos.

Whilst you are watching these videos - please make a list of all the features of persuasive speech you can think of.

Activity 3: Download and read Friar Lawrence's speech in Act 4 Scene 1 here. Again this has the Shakespearean words on the left and then a modern day translation on the right.

Once you have read through this, I would like you to pick out persuasive features in Friar Lawrence's speech.

You should spent about 1 hour on this including the grammar activity.

Maths

Maths

KL: Problem Solving: Place Value and Number Lines.

Today we are continuing on our learning about problem solving and deeply engaging our brains.

I would like you to begin by completing this challenge here:

Problem 1: Number Differences. The instructions are provided on the sheet.

If you find this to difficult, there is a simplified version of the problem here. Please challenge yourself appropriately.

Once you have completed this, I would like you to have a go at this interactive problem here.

Number Lines in Disguise.

Read through the information and mini challenges on the page. You will find the interactive challenge at the bottom of the page. There is a number line and you have to work out what number the 'dot' would be on. I would like you to complete this 10 times. Please note: you can increase the difficulty of this by dragging the slider. Challenge yourself appropriately.

Maths should take you about 1 hour.

PSHE

K.L.: How can I manage my feelings and anxieties when moving to secondary school?

Activity 1: Problem Page. (5 minutes)

Write a quick response to this concern:

Dear Ask A Friend,

I am really worried about starting secondary school, what is the best thing to do?

Nusrat, age 11.

Activity 2: Feelings Brainstorm (5 minutes)

Remembering our learning from yesterday afternoon, create a brainstorm with all the feelings somebody might have when moving to secondary school. Remember - it is totally normal to feel a big mix of all these feelings at once.

Activity 3: Hopes and Challenges (10 minutes)

'It’s the night before Nusrat starts secondary school (KS3) and they’re in their bedroom thinking about the next day. Nusrat’s uniform is all laid out and their bag is packed and ready. Nusrat feels kind of excited, but a few things are worrying them too.'

Write down: Hopes on one side of the page and Challenges on the other side of the page.

Note down what Nusrat might be excited about under the Hopes heading and what he might be worried about under the Challenges heading.

Activity 4: Managing Challenge (15 minutes)

Choose 4 of the challenges you just identified in the previous activity.

If you didn't get too many you could choose from: getting lost around the new school building, not being in the same class as best friend/s, more homework, big lunch hall and choosing a meal, don’t understand new subjects, wanting to join a club but don’t know whom to go with, not knowing the rules and getting detention

For each challenge that you choose, brainstorm different ways in which Nusrat could manage that particular worry, including sources of support fo help we discussed yesterday. Highlight ot underline which strategy you think would be most helpful for each worry.

Activity 5: Sources of help or support. (10 minutes)

Use the sources of support cards here. Rank the cards in order or reliability and usefulness for each situation. Which ones might be most useful for the challenges you just identified?

Activity 6: Reflecting on today's learning. (15 minutes)

Using the second sheet under the resource cards above to write yourself a letter to open and read the night before you start your new school. Think about which key bits of advice to include.

Theme should take you around 1 hour and a half.
