WEDNESDAY 30TH JUNE HOME LEARNING

Wednesday 30th June

Hello there Year 6! Unfortunately we are back to home learning and will not be returning to school until Friday 9th July. It is expected that you complete all of today's lessons.

Please find below our home learning lessons for today. Don't forget that Mrs Phillips will be contacting you throughout the week to check on how you are doing and to answer any questions. Please contact the office if you need to update your phone number.

Remember - email all your completed work to misspool@reedley.lancs.sch.uk and we will get back to you within 24 hours.

Keep those brains busy!

Miss Pool and Mrs Phillips :)

Reading

K.L. Activate prior knowledge about formal letters and explore new vocabulary.

This week we are going to be focusing on a formal letter for our Guided Reading sessions. This is because in a few days time I am going to be asking you to write a formal letter of your own about Romeo and Juliet - so pay close attention and really look closely at the features a formal letter must include!

Today I would like you to complete a Pre-Read task to get you ready for our Guided Reading session tomorrow. You can download the task here

Taks 1 asks you to create a mind map remembering what we would expect to see in a formal letter. We have done lots of this at school so I would expect you can think of at least 10 things minimum!

Task 2 asks you to match up 4 new words with their synonyms. Use an online thesaurus or dictionary to help if needed. Note: these words will pop up in tomorrow's text so if you find out what they mean today we are already one step ahead.

Task 3 asks you to think about these pairs of synonyms. Which one is most formal? What is the slight difference between each pair of words? When might you use each of the words in real life?

This should take you about 1/2 hour.

Remember to spend 20 minutes reading for pleasure to work towards your reading award.

English

Grammar

K.L. Explore, collect and use vocabulary typical of formal and informal speech.

This week our grammar focus is going to be based around formal and informal speech. This links really closely to our Romeo and Juliet topic and will help you enormously when you come to your writing tasks at the end of the week.

Today I would like you to rewrite these sentences, changing the underlined word to a more formal word or phrase:

It is time to start the lesson.

He is feeling ok now.

That bloke is here again.

I got a book for my birthday.

Writing

K.L: Prepare playscripts to read aloud with dramatic effect.

We are going to be continuing with our unit on Romeo and Juliet whilst home learning. Some activites however have had to be changed so that you can access them from home so today's lesson might not carry on from what you were doing yesterday in English.

Today we are going to focus on Act 3 Scene 1. In this scene, the Capulet men (Tybalt, Petruccio and others) meet the Montague men (Benovlio, Mercutio and Romeo) in the streets of Verona. Tybalt is looking for a fight with the Montagues and keeps pestering them. Mercutio agrees to fight with him and sadly Mercutio ends up being killed by Tybalt.

Romeo becomes enraged, seeks revenge on Tybalt and after a fight, Romeo kills Tybalt (who is Juliet's cousin- uh oh!).

Activity 1 - I would like you to download and read through Act 3 Scene 1 here. This version has the Shakespearean language on the left hand side and a modern translation on the right hand side so you should be able to understand it. Pick out any words that you might not understand as you are reading and use wordhippo to clarify their meaning.

Activity 2 - Place the events of this scene into the correct order from this sheet here. The first one has been done for you.

Activity 3 - Remember that Shakespeare's intention when he wrote this scene was for it to be acted out and to entertain the crowds of people. With this in mind, I would like you to think about each character's intention when they are speaking (what is the purpose for them speaking and in what way should they say it when they are acting it out). Attached here is a sheet with different intentions on - for example 'to calm someone down' or 'to anger somebody'.

Your task today is to pick out lines from Act 3 Scene 1 that match these different intentions. For example, when Romeo says to Tybalt 'I love you more than you can understand until you know the reason why I love you' his intent is to explain to Tybalt the reason why he won't fight him - his intent could also be to calm him down.

Once you have sorted out some of these lines, I would like you to practise saying them out loud. Really focus on what the character's purpose is for speaking and think how that might change the way you speak the line. For example the way a character speaks when they are trying to calm somebody down will ber very different to the way a character speaks when they are trying to anger somebody.

You should spent about 1 hour on this including the grammar activity.

Maths

Maths

KL: Comparing and ordering fractions

For our Maths learning this week, we are going to be focusing on fractions. Today our key learning will be to compare and order fractions with different denominators.

First, I would like you to have a go at this question here as a quick cold task.

Once completed, I would like you to download the answer to check your work here. (Don’t be tempted to peek before hand – you will only be cheating yourself and making the work too hard for you today! J )

If you got the answers correct – great! You are already quite confident with comparing and ordering fractions! I would like you to have a go at these ordering fractions challenges here. There is a bronze, silver and gold challenge.

If you didn’t get the answers correct – fantastic! That means we are going to learn something new today and are going to become more confident in comparing and ordering fractions. I would like you to download this PowerPoint here. This will talk you through how to compare and order fractions. Once you have understood how to find which fraction is greatest and how to order fractions, you are ready to have a go at today’s activity here.

If you need a little more support, on this website you will find two great videos that will talk you through this process again. BBC Bitesize

Maths should take you about 1 hour.

Science

Electricity

K.L. How do we draw circuits accurately and what is the purpose of drawing circuits?

Today we are going to be starting our topic on Electricity. We are beginning by looking at drawing circuits.

Scientists use specific symbols to show all the different parts of an electrical circuit.

Task 1: Can you suggest what you would use to draw each element of a circuit? Use this sheet here as a guide to help you.

The symbols that you have created are great! However, I bet you haven't drawn the same as everybody else in the class. So how would we know which bit was the cell or the bulb if everybody used their own symbols? That is why it is important that scientists (and us from now on!) use the same symbols to represent each of these things. Now it is time for us to learn the correct symbols.

Task 2: Match up the correct scientific symbol with the name, definition and a picture of this object on this sheet. You might need to conduct some research to help you - this video here might be a good starting place.

Now that you are a scientific symbol genius - it is time to put your skills into practise!

Task 3: Begin by labelling the parts of this scientific diagram of a circuit and the have a go at drawing two circuits of your own from the pictures that are given. Both activities are on this sheet here

Theme should take you around 1 hour.

Online Learning Platform

Today I have created a challenge on Spelling Shed - it begins NOW and ends Friday at 3p.m.

This is an individual challenge, involving Year 6 children from both classes, and is called Home Learning Spelling Showdown.

The winner is the person who has the most correct answers at the end.

I will reveal the winners name on Monday's home learning page! Will it be you?!

Please make sure all your friends know about our challenge - and good luck!
