06.01.19 Parent governor vacancy, Children's Univeristy, Rec admissions for 2021, Reading For Pleasure, Time Table competition, Attendance Treat
Monday, 06 January 2020
Dear Parents/Carers,
School reopens
I hope everyone had a lovely break over the last two weeks.
School re-opens to all pupils on Tuesday 7th January.
Please ensure that your child brings their full PE kit to school on the first day of term, which should include a pair of black PE pumps.
Reception Places
If you have a child born between 01-09-2015 and 31-08-2016, then you need to make an application for your preferred primary school, to start in September 2020. The closing date for these applications is 15th January 2020 and should be done online at https://www.lancashire.gov.uk/children-education-families/schools/apply-for-a-school-place/apply-for-a-primary-school-place/
Alternatively, you can search for www.lanacshire.gov.uk then search for school admissions.
If you miss this deadline, then your child may be allocated a place in a school that is not necessarily local or convenient to you.
Please see Mrs Iqbal if you need any help with the process.
Parent Elections
Last term I informed you that a position had become available for a new co-opted governor to join our governing body. This position has been filled by Mrs Nasim, who has been a parent governor since 2016. Therefore, there is now a vacancy for another parent governor to join the governing body.
If you would like to be considered for the position, please email me before 4pm on Monday 13th January at recruitment@reedley.lancs.sch.uk .
If more than one parent is interested, then we will need to hold a parental election.
Children’s University
If your child has completed any of the additional Children’s University challenges over the Christmas holidays, then these need to be in school by Friday 10th January. I will calculating additional credits on this day. If your child has a University Passport, they can bring it with them but I can still calculate additional credits even if they don’t have a passport.
Anyone who wishes to purchase a University Passport to collect additional credits from external providers, can buy them from Mrs Iqbal.
Spelling Bee
The ‘Spelling Bee’ will run as follows:
Round One – Friday 24th January 2020
The first round of the Spelling Bee competition will take place in school. Children will have two minutes to spell as many words aloud as they can correctly. A point will be awarded for each correct spelling. The child who receives the highest point score from each year group will go through to the semi-final against Briercliffe and Walverden
Each year group from Y1 to Y6 has a list of words to learn that are from the National Curriculum. Children will have already practised many of these words over the Autumn Term and this will be a useful opportunity to ensure that they have remembered these words. There has been a slight change this year to ensure consistency across the competition – spellings will be only accepted if the children say the letter name when spelling and not the letter sound. If there is any confusion about this, please speak with Mrs Gorrell.
Times table Competition
We will be taking part again this year in the SWAT times table competition, where children from Y2 to Y6 are able to compete against children from 11 other local schools. Only three children from each year group are able to attend the Grand Final, which will take place on 19th March. Practice papers are available from classteachers to allow children to prepare. The finalists will be chosen from Round One, which will take place in the week beginning 24th February in classes. The children will answer as many questions on the paper as they can, in 100 seconds. They are not expected to complete the whole paper!
All children are encouraged to have a go at Round One.
Last year we brought home the trophy for every year group from the competition and have therefore established quite a reputation for our times table abilities.
We need to work hard to defend our titles this year!
Times table tests will resume this week at lunchtime with Bronze, Silver and Gold
tests taking place for children who have been practising.
Reading For Pleasure
We have a scheme in school where we encourage children to carry out activities in response to books, to develop a love of reading. The children work through a series of activities linked with different countries, the first of which is Australia. I challenged all the children in the school to achieve at least the Australia award by Christmas. Most of our children have, and have received many certificates for their efforts.
If your child has not achieved the Australia award, then your child’s classteacher will be contacting you, to ask you to support and encourage them to do so by February half term.
Attendance Treat
All of the children who achieved at least 96% attendance in the Autumn Term will take part in an attendance treat next week.
If you child’s attendance did not reach 96%, then they can try again for the treat at Easter. Our whole school attendance has been very poor throughout the Autumn term and every day of school missed can have an impact on your child’s education.
Maternity Leave
On a personal note, I would like to inform you all that I will be taking a period of maternity leave shortly after Easter, as I am due to have a baby in May 2020.
Mrs Gorrell will be Acting Headteacher and Mrs Collins will be Acting Deputy Headteacher during this period of time. I will to return to school as Headteacher in September 2020, although I will be in school towards the end of the school year.
Thank you for your support,
Mrs Sarah Bell
Headteacher
