Reading for Pleasure

'Reading for Pleasure' Bookmarks

This year, the bookmarks are linked with different types of animals and contain activities that cover different subjects across the curriculum - all of them based around reading!

You will find your child's bookmark at the back of their homework book. There are lots of different types of activities e.g. reading aloud, discussion, use of internet, map reading, sharing books etc. Each child should complete the six activities over a two week period (to a good standard) in order to move on to their next bookmark.   Your child will recieve a certificate for their achievements in Friday's assembly.

Please have a look at an example bookmark below.

Read Aloud Curriculum

At Reedley, we understand the importance of reading aloud to children to engage them in a variety of texts and support a growing love of reading.  We have worked with the children to develop a 'Read Aloud Curriculum' for each class.  The children have chosen books, alongside their teacher, that they wish to read over the academic year.  These books are a range of picture books, poems, novels and non-fiction.  Your child's class may prefer to choose one of our 'mystery books' as part of Reading Rocks - they will recieve these every half term.

Have a look below to see what your child could be reading in class this term.

Fantastic Book Awards

We are delighted to be taking part in Lancashire's Fantastic Book awards this year.  Children from Year 5 and Year 6 will be reading texts and voting on their favourites.  The Reedley winner will go towards the national votes for the 'Fantastic Book of the Year.'  Our texts this year are:

  • 'The Boy Who Fell From the Sky' by Benjamin Dean
  • 'The Beasts of Knobbly Bottom:  Attack of the Vampire Sheep' by Emily-Jane Clark
  • 'Spellstone' by Ross Montgomery
  • 'The Piano at the Station' by Helen Rutter
  • 'The Treasure Hunters' by Lisa Thompson

We can't wait to see which book wins!
