Creative Topic
Summer 1
Theme: What the Romans Did
Our key questions are:
What is the impact of tourism in the UK?
What are the human and physical features of a region in the UK?
Compare the life of the Romans.
How has life changed after the Romans?
Explore Roman art and artists.
Science: Light and Shadows
Throughout our science topic about light and shadows we have been investigating and answering key questions. The questions that we investigated are:
Do we need light to see things?
What happens to light on a surface?
What do the terms opaque, transparent and translucent mean?
How are shadows formed?
Spring 1
Theme: Rock and Roll
Our key questions are:
Investigate how rocks are different.
How has life changed after the ice age?
What effects do volcanoes and earthquakes have on us?
What can fossils tell us about the past?
Investigate which materials make a suitable printing motif.
Science: Rocks and Fossils
This term we have been exploring rocks and fossils. We role played the process of fossil formation to help us remember what happens. Then we explored different types of rocks. We looked at the inside of three chocolate bars to see what we noticed. When we finished looking at the chocolate bars, we matched up the type of rock that it was like. Towards the end of the lesson we looked at different rocks and matched these with the types of rocks.
History: Stone Age to Iron Age
This term we have exploring the Stone Age. We have been thinking about what we would do if we had no shops for food or clothes or no shelter. We decided this would be really tricky! We researched the three different periods in the Stone Age and learned these are, Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic or the Old Stone Age, Middle Stone Age or New Stone Age. Then we discussed whether Stone Age men were just simple hunter or gatherers and how life changed when men learned to farm.
Geography: Volcanoes
Autumn 2
Theme: Healthy Humans
Our key questions are:
How do our choices impact on our lifestyle?
Are the diets different between animals and humans?
What are the essential elements of a balanced meal?
Locate where ingredients come from on a series of maps. Link to countries and continents studied.
Science: Healthy Humans
We have been exploring the different food groups in our diets. We explored what we mean by a balanced diet and how our choices impact our lifestyle. We researched the different diets of animals and compared an animal’s diet to what we eat.
DT: Cooking
We received a letter from Mo Farah asking us to create a pasta dish that included seasonal vegetables, was healthy and could be made at home. We researched which vegetables are in season and when. We then looked at the vegetables in season in winter and decided which ones would be good for a pasta dish. During the design process we thought about the size of the vegetables and whether they would be cooked or uncooked. We spent time cooking and preparing our meal and then we ate it and evaluated.
Art: Sculptures
In Art we explored the work of Claes Oldenburg. We noticed that he created soft sculptures which appeared on buildings and in museums. During the design phase we focused on using tone to create shading. Then created our own ‘healthy’ sculptures using clay.
Autumn1
Theme: There's No Place like Home
Geography: Our local Area
During our Geography we have been exploring the place that we live. We have been comparing our locality today to the 1890's and 1600's and discovering how the human and physical features have changed over the years. We noticed that in the 1600's our area had more physical features and less human features. However, today there are less physical features and more human features.
We used Digi mapping to locate our home and created our own route maps. We then identified what some of the symbols were and why they were used on a map.
History: Local History
This term we have been exploring the Pendle Witches. We have been exploring the story of the Pendle Witches's and were introduced to the characters Alizon Device, John law and King James VI. We used drama techniques to help us retell the story.
Morris Dancing
During our theme we were luckily enough to invite Morris dancers into school. The whole of Year 3 took part in a workshop with the Northwest association to learn a dance from our area.
We discovered some of the history of Morris dances, explored the key skills involved in Morris dancing which included skipping, teamwork and copying and we had a go at practicing and performing a dance. During the dance from the Gisburn we practiced the chorus and the figures cast out and cross over. We loved using the sticks and getting involved.
