A trip to Leighton Hall
On the 10th and 11th of November, the pupils in year 5 were offered the opportunity to spend the day visiting Leighton Hall in Lancaster. Leighton Hall has been a much loved family home and the centre of an agricultural estate since mediaeval times.
The class branched out on a supervised foraging walk, where they explored where real food comes from and how different fruits and vegetables are grown. This gave the students a chance to discover the delights of foods that are edible, as well as learning how to avoid foods that are non-edibles.
The children in 5HM cleverly identified the link between that of a yew tree they discovered in the forrest, with their previous learning of hearning the name of the tree in the topic they are learning about in English, Carrie's War.
They engaged in a fire safety talk, which explained how to walk and work around the fire, in order to keep themselves safe.
Children were educated on food hygiene and personal hygiene before they prepared their meal, which included the correct use of knives. They harvested apples that had fallen to the ground, before returning to Leighton’s outdoor kitchen, where they turned their bounty into a delicious meal, apple crumble.
During this fantastic trip, the students learnt how to correctly and safetly light a fire using a flint, and also had the opportunity to plant a bulb of garlic, which they took home to grow and show their parents.
The children have been enjoying world book day, taking part in fun activities.
