Year 2 2020-2021

Autumn 1

The place where I live (focus- Geography and History)

Geography

We are going to find out about the physical and human features in the local area.  For the knowledge organiser for this topic please see the link at the bottom of this page.

Here are a few pictures of things we found on our walk around our local area.

History

This week we have been thinking about how our local area has changed. We looked at some maps from 1940s and 1960 and found that our school was built in place of a farm. Lots of the houses we live in had not been built and there were lots of farmers’ fields instead!

We thought of questions we would like to ask Mrs Walton about how the school had changed.

When was the school built?

How many classes did it have at first?

Who was the first head teacher?

We found out that the school was built in 1972 and took two years to build opening in 1974. It opened with only 7 classes. The first head teacher was called Mr Robinson and since then there have been three more heads.

Autumn 2       Fighting fit

In this topic we look at how to stay healthy and how we change as we get older.

New Year cards and calendars Art and DT

Cards - we used different coloured tissue paper for the trees. We tore strips carefully making sure when we stuck them on there was no gaps. We linked this with a skill of colour awshing  we had learnt during our Art Week.

Calendars- We designed a relief inspired by outdoors for example trees, wind clouds etc...  We painted using the fours colours that represnt the seasons.

STEM

For our STEM project this year the children had to design, make and evaluate a sleigh for Santa that would securely hold his sack of toys. The sleigh hadn to have wheels just incase it doesn't snow at christmas. Once we had built them we let them go down the ramp to test how far thy rolled and whether the sack fell out of the sleigh.

Here are a few of our finnished sleighs.

Spring 2

Explorers (Focus- History)

We have been finding out about Neil Armstrong. We read books, looked on the internet and watched film clips.

We learnt he was the first person to walk on the moon.

We sequenced the events of the first moon landing.
