Summer term
Evaluate existing products
At the start of this unit, we explored a range of existing bug houses. We looked at each in turn and discussed whether we thought it would be purposeful.
Design
Before designing our own bug houses, we worked carefully to measure and find out the dimensions of the existing bug houses. This helped us to decide how big to make ours. We sketched the bug houses that we already had and recorded the measurements.
We all designed a bug house that had upto 2 compartments
Make
Working in small groups, we used hacksaws and staplers make our designs come alive. Miss Radcliffe used the hot glue gun but we had to be precise in explaining were to put the glue!
What do you think of our final products?

Do you want some ideas of what else you can do linked to sewing?
If you have enjoyed this sewing unit, maybe you want to carry on this skill at home. Below are a few ideas that you could explore at home with an adult.
Video 1: This video explores how to thread a needle, knot the thread, sew a running stitch (all of which we have been doing at school already) and sew on a button. Then use these skills to make a felt monster!
Video 2: This video explores the blanket stitch, make a simple button hole and create a pencil case.
Video 3: This video is perfect for the Easter break as it teaches you how to make cute characters from felt, using a running stitch.
If you make something at home, bring it into school. I'd love to see it and celebrate your achievements on the website.
Autumn term
Design
We designed model spooky / haunted houses that could be used to share ideas about how houses could be decorated for halloween.
Having explored circuits in Science, we encorporated these into our house designs.
Make
Working in small teams, we all have a part to play on producing our houses!
